Unblogged Bits (Wed. 18-May-11 1730)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Religious Right And Republican Establishment Square Off Over Mitch Daniels – If it weren’t over someone who might possibly end up as our next president, I’d be sitting back in my chair and eating popcorn, watching this. GOP Establishment: “We’re afraid that a fringe religious zealot will get nominated and lose the election.” Religious Right: “That’s exactly the only person we will allow you to nominate.” GOP Establishment: “…”
  2. Misery on the screen – Lordy, I hate slides like that.
  3. ‘Awake’ TV Trailer – Split-Reality Cop Drama – It doesn’t sound interesting enough to devote it to regular watching (for me), but it does sound like an interesting idea.
  4. Consumers Union: Americans Deserve A Financial Watchdog Not A Big Bank Lapdog – Well said, CU.
  5. Abbotta Bad Boy – “Sexually repressed men sure are a drag on the world.”
  6. Tea Party Leader To John Boehner: “I’m Sick Of The Tears” – Okay, I find Boehner a bit overwrought at times — but these guys are being dicks. Which isn’t surprising, perhaps, but …
  7. Report: PSN password resets exploited, accounts compromised again – Ouch.
  8. BREAKING: Jerome Corsi’s Birther Book Pulled from Shelves! – Esquire – Be sure and read through to the end …

  1. RE: Misery on the screen:

I’m an MS student in a science discipline at a predominantly teaching university. Twice in the past couple of years my department has interviewed for tenure-track positions. Grad students in particular were asked to be part of the process, so I attended every every interviewee’s presentation, as well as as many “meet the students” sessions as I could manage. I expect I (and a few other students) surprised them by being old enough to be their parents. We are a non-traditional student body.

Our department ultimately ended up hiring two excellent young professors. But no one — NO ONE — out of eleven presenters passed what I call Karen’s Powerpoint Test: all presentation slides should be clearly readable and make sense at the back of the room.

  2. I would say that if a PPT slide makes you wish you had a hardcopy so you could scribble notes over it furiously to make it clearer … it’s a bad slide.

While the guideline that you should never have more than 3 bullets, each of which goes no more that 3 lines, on a slide is probably simplistic, it’s not a bad goal to strive toward. Like Twitter, imposing limitations can increase the efficiency of writing.
