Returning to reality, how cool was it to see that? Can you describe your reaction? Is it the history or the art that is most overwhelming?
It’s the “OMG IT’S REAL,” combined with the monumental size, and the setting as well. Actually, now, knowing the setting helps me picture the art better. But it is, indeed, hugely imposing as a physical presence, added to the history of the piece and it’s iconic (if not totemic) role in Western art.
It’s probably just as well that they didn’t allow photos here, or in the Uffizi — I don’t think the Internets are big enough for the number I would have taken.
