Unblogged Bits (Fri. 14-Oct-11 1730)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Federal Appeals Court Blocks Alabama Assault On Immigrant School Children – Good.
  2. House Passes Toxic Coal Ash Bill – “Toxic” describes most of the bills the GOP House passes.
  3. Fischer: Fornication And Homosexuality Should Be Made Illegal: Kyle Mantyla
  4. Google to finally shut down Google Buzz, along with Google Labs – Sorry to hear about Buzz — not because I ever use the direct service any more, but because it did a nice tie-in between Google Reader and Gmail. I’m hoping that will, somehow, continue.
  5. More Corn is Used For Ethanol in U.S. Than For Food or Feed — The Top Five Reasons We Should Stop This Madness: Climate Guest Blogger
  6. The Old Mitt Romney Photo That He Probably Wants Destroyed – Heh.
  7. Comment of the Day: Today’s Best Religion Joke – Heh. Been years since I heard that one.
  8. Arizona Town Hates Peace-Sign Park Bench – Stay classy, Arizona!
  9. McCain vows to nullify defense cuts if they’re triggered – The Washington Post – It will be interesting to see if Congress is willing to actually do anything in a coordinated fashion regarding the budget, including overturning the “super-committee” mechanism.
  10. Rick Perry Grovels To Bill Donohue, Rejects Robert Jeffress’ Anti-Catholicism – I don’t know that I call it groveling — but it will be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming weeks. Will Perry publicly (not to Bill Donohue on the phone) repudiate Jeffress’ statements? What will Jeffress do about it?
  11. Fischer: The Tea Party Ended Slavery In America – Fischer is correct when he says that “evangelical Christians” were leaders in the pre-Civil War abolitionist movement, the results of the Great Awakening earlier in the century — though there were many other prominent figures then and in the preceding decades and century who were not evangelical Christians who also played a major role. And there were, of course, many Christian leaders, the same sorts of Baptists and Methodists whose actions are lauded by Fischer, who were in the South and who claimed their Christian beliefs and a reading of the Bible supported slavery. And, of course, “evangelical Christian” in the mid-19th Century has very little to do with “Tea Party” of the early 21s Century. And, of course, in none of these debates was it ever framed as supporting or opposing “Sharia Law” or Islam. And, of course, Bryan Fischer is a dolt.
