I’d contest that Hitler was doing it for Jesus (or for anyone else but his delusions). His religious beliefs were evolving and opportunistic and pretty zany, defying any simple label (Christian, Pagan, Atheist).
That particular Biblical injunction is largely from John, the last book written, and it flies in the face of the earlier Gospels with their message of sincere good works and lovingkindness being what God is looking for in salvation. I don’t accept John’s formulation, as it stands — but, then, I tend toward being a Universalist in many ways, anyway.
