I've already been informed that Steak 'n Shake is good but not "all that" … but the new location they are opening in is highly convenient to us, so I expect we'll make occasional use of it. #ddtb

On November 17, metro Denver will finally get its own Steak 'n Shake, a link in a chain that started…
Steak and Shake has very good shakes….and that's about it, in my opinion. Their burgers are 'alright' and nothing to write home about. The main reason I don't go there more is that they tend to be a bit on the pricey side…at least for my taste. Now, if a Five Guys opens in your area, definitely give them a try.
I like them and agree with Mark. Good shakes. Ok burgers. We had a Red Robin open for about 3 months before it died, but fortunately we have a Five Guys….best. burger. ever.
+Mark Means We have Five Guys, just not as convenient. Also prefer Sonic. You're the second person I've heard mention their priciness.
+Les Jenkins Yeah, but I'm looking for something not quite as fancy as RR (which we have in abundance). (Though it sounds like RR prices.) A decently good burger place we can drive through on our way to something else.
Obviously its been a while since I regularly went to S&S, but I'd say my impression is that they are significantly below RR's prices. Still pricier than other fast food outlets of similar quality, but not near RR. But then they don't invest a lot in the type of memorabilia decor that RR does, either. Pretty much plain black and white tiles and simple prints on the walls. S&S is a favorite of my dad's wife and if she's given a choice of gift certificates for holidays and anniversaries will always specify them.
If you end up in the Springs and feel like shortening your lifespan by a considerable amount, I recommend Crave Burgers. I had the wonton duck burger; Lee had the one sandwiched between a pair of Krispy Kremes. Plus, I think their liquor license went through, so now they have booze filled shakes.

We have a couple of them around Ann Arbor and we'll drop in every now and then, but it's no Red Robin.
With all due respect to your hubby, De, that sounds disgusting. 🙂
I ate at Steak ‘n Shake in Kalamazoo several times. It was pretty good, but I like Culvers’ better. I don’t think Red Robin is a valid comparison since Red Robin is a big step up in many ways from Steak ‘n Shake. In my opinion, Steak ‘n Shake is half-way between fast food and a restaurant and bar like Red Robin. I’d put Sonic in the fast food category with Burger King, Carls’ Jr, and McDonalds.
Five Guys’ burgers are good, but I prefer Smashburger these days. Those two are the closest burger joints to my house, and I go to Smashburger about 9 times out of 10. They are comparable to Steak ‘n Shake rather than to fast food or to something like Red Robin, and I think that if a Steak ‘n Shake was a comparable distance from my place, I would still prefer Smashburger.
I miss Pup ‘n’ Taco.
🙁
One bite sufficed for yours truly. But the point being that they have a wiiiide range of options. So to speak.
