Oh, bad, wicked, naughty Newt!

How dare you declare war on Christmas by using the "H" word instead of the "C" word? (And with no mention of the "J" word, even!)

I expect all of the evangelical Christian groups who have been milling your way as Perry and Cain imploded to demand an instant apology for offending Baby Jesus. Prepare yourself, Newt! Repent! #ddtb

  1. I'm not supporter of Newt…at all…but still….this "story" was a bunch of crap. The whole thing was based on an email, of all things, that they didn't even show.

And that's a "War on Christmas" how?

  2. As the story notes, companies advertising "Holiday" vs. "Christmas" sales and events have been pointed out, lambasted, condemned, and boycotted by various Religious Right organizations and pundits as being part of some creeping secularized "War on Christmas."

Yet I suspect that none of those folks — many of whom are beginning to shift their support to Gingrich — will be making comment about Gingrich Productions putting out a generic "Holiday" promotion without mentioning by name the "true reason for the Season."

  3. On a related note, our pastor last Sunday devoted part of his sermon to an explanation of why he usually says “Happy Holidays” (complete with mocking “Harumph! It’s Merry Christmas. preacher!”). It’s because it is currently Advent, not Christmas. Christmas Day ends the season of Advent and begins the Christmastide (the 12 days of Christmas). By the media and stores having Christmas start at what feels like sometime in October, the real “war” is on Thanksgiving and Advent…and patience. Blessed Advent, season of hope, to you!

    1. @Solonor – A nice thought, though people also wish “Happy New Year” before the event, too. On the other hand, the rector at our church refuses to decorate the sanctuary for Christmas until after the 4 Advent Sunday service, for that very reason. Advent is about expectation and anticipation.
