A lot of folks supporting the Keystone XL pipeline don't realize that it has nothing to do with providing the US more oil. As the article notes, there is plenty of existing pipeline capacity to the US from Canada. But all those pipelines end at refineries in the Midwest; the Keystone XL line would run to the Gulf states, where it would be refined and … sold overseas, without paying any US taxes.
So it might have some job impact during the construction, and it might pay for some refining jobs in the gulf, but it's not meant as and would not be a source of additional oil (or lower gas prices) for American consumers.
But I'm sure somebody will profit … #ddtb
