Karen Handel, the former GOP Secretary of State of Alabama, and the person blamed by insiders as being the driver behind Komen's recent dumping of Planned Parenthood, has resigned. Her resignation letter is below. A couple of interesting things:
1. Handel claims the whole grant policy rework was going on before she ever joined, and while she supported it the whole thing was also approved by everyone else (so, presumably, it's not fair to blame her for it, no matter what anyone else says).
2. Handel also claims that trying to distance Komen from "controversy" is somehow not "political."
Given Handel's repeated public attacks on PPFA during her unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign, it's difficult to take either of those things with a straight face, especially the second. But I'm pleased to see that she and/or SGK saw her as a distraction from the efforts that Komen asserts are their mission, women's health, and that she's stepping down. #ddtb
