Rep. Akin apparently isn't alone in thinking that "secret secretions" will keep a "legitimate" rape victim from getting pregnant.
And the more people who say it, the more people will believe it.

I know a woman who believes this…but only because she believes you can't get pregnant unless you have an orgasm.
Leaving aside the abortion debate — the thing that bugs me the most about this is the sheer level of ignorance. It's 2012 and some people are still acting like the female reproductive system is some kind of spooky mystery.
Because to them it is. All full of squicky deep darkness, blood, and terrifying sexy stuff, with the occasional "blessed events" to make up for the Eve-il.
Now, if only we could persuade people who believe this (medical knowledge from the beginning of the 14th century) to willingly follow all the other medical practices and teachings of that era…
