    Like Hollywood, the book world uses the profit from best sellers to support lesser sellers. Because these best sellers make more profit due to more sales, stack em high sellers can sell em cheap – supermarkets, Amazon etc. Independents rely on the best sellers to support the shop, something Walmart doesn’t have to do- Supermarkets use Special Offers to pull people through the door – ‘While we’re here we’ll buy this that and the other’.

    Supermarkets don’t carry the lesser sellers. Independents die without best sellers. Every time a real bookshop dies, the market moves closer to everything being 50 shades (Looking at bookshelves today – literally 10-20 ‘Shades’ clones)
