Dave Hill’s ★★★½ review of Argo (2012) on Letterboxd.com

Movie Review: "Argo" (2012)
A great spy tale, a somewhat mediocre drama, but a remarkable production. The third and last of the films I watched on my travels last week.

A great job of keeping the tension cranked up to 11 even though you know what the outcome is.
For us, having seen Flight just the day before, seeing John Goodman doing another bang up job in a supporting role was rather amusing. Kept expecting him to whip out a suitcase of drugs like he did in Flight.
But, yeah, so many cultural touch stones that I had forgotten from the late seventies just rang true, especially if you were watching the news during the Hostage Crises.
The tension was certainly there, but it felt more than a bit punched up for purposes of the drama (up to and including the tarmac).
The Tarmac scene was abit way over the top and cheesy, could have been handled much better.
Way I would have done it would be for them to get out on the runway just as the plane lifted off. You would still have the tension of the Guard figuring out that they had been had and heading out to get the plane, but it was way too late.
