Interesting (if depressing) study of the derogatory use of certain terms on Twitter — hand curated so that positive uses of the terms (racial, gender orientation, etc.) could be excluded.
An interesting methodology, especially in the act of measuring offensive tweets as a percentage of total tweets.
Unfortunately, it would be very difficult to determine why certain terms are highly concentrated in certain areas. Perhaps measurement over time can explain this. It's quite possible that these could be explained by events occurring in these localities – for example, I feel quite confident that a heatmap of anti-Russian or anti-Muslim tweets from a couple of weeks ago might have a bright center in eastern Massachusetts.

I'm sure there's variations over time. I suspect there is a baseline (and I do mean base) that remains constant over medium intervals.
