Pick your political advice carefully

While the temptation is to wholeheartedly encourage the GOP to pursue  Phyllis Schlafly's advice to the hilt, which would surely drive them into obscurity if not extinction, the fact is I want a vibrant, thriving, more inclusive Republican party, in opposition to the Dems and encouraging the latter to be able to shift further Left. And that includes dropping the nativist rhetoric and embrace that this country is not made of WASPs any more.

'Calling the GOP’s need to reach out to Latinos a “great myth,” Schlafly said that “the people the Republicans should reach out to are the white votes, the white voters who didn’t vote in the last election.” […] “The propagandists are leading us down the wrong path,” she said. “There’s not any evidence at all that these Hispanics coming in from Mexico will vote Republican.”'

That's going to be a problem for you, isn't it, Ms. Schlafly. And certainly they won't if you keep complaining that all those immigrants are just coming from other countries expecting hand-outs.

  1. I remember the left falling for the same delusion in Britain in the 1980s. "If only Labour was more left wing than all those people who don't vote will vote Labour". And in 1983 they went down to one of their most crushing defeats in history, and it was 14 years before they won another election.

  2. The GOP is not going down without a fight, but they are fighting in the wrong direction.  If they continue, they will eventually fall. Which beats their being in charge, but isn't (to my mind) overall good for the country for very long.  The Dems need someone to keep them honest.
