Mascots, Alumni, and Correctness, Oh My!

While acknowledging that I'm of the privileged class when it comes to matters of diversity, I find the brouhaha about school mascots (from all directions) to be by turns highly amusing and intensely annoying.

I don't see anything particularly wrong or "un-diverse" about Denver Boone (caveat stated above), so getting into a PC snit about him seems more driven by ideology than caring about people.  On the other hand, the folks who treat changing of the official mascot as some sort of existential threat also strike me as people who are getting way too invested in the matter.

  1. And sometimes these moves to retire mascots don't work out that well. The NBA basketball team that used to play in Baltimore and now plays in Washington used to be known as the Bullets. Eventually the team changed its name – not because of outside pressure, but because of the feelings of the owner of the team, Abe Pollin.

The team was changed to the Wizards. Or, as I like to say, the Satan Worshippers.

At the time of the change, other people had concerns about the name change:

"When Wizards was chosen, the president of the D.C. chapter of the NAACP said it invoked images of the KKK and should not be used. A New Jersey-based barnstorming basketball team known as the Harlem Wizards filed a trademark infringement suit."

    You can't please everybody.
