Given the current official and fan standards, I'm amused by both the abbreviation "Dr." and the use of "Dr. Who" as the name of the character, either of which would get you rhetorically lynched these days. #doctorwho
Well as it’s International Cover a Bishop in Treacle week, I’ll let you into a secret.
‘Round the Horne’ and ‘Beyond our Ken’ are lost gems. I say lost, there are cd’s available from the BBC, but they are not well known today, even in Britain, tending to be overshadowed by The Goons.
They were radio sketch shows in the 60’s, with troop nominally led by Kenneth Horne, who got away with some outrageously smutty comedy because much of the general public didn’t fully understand the allusions. Sandy and Julian (‘ello, I’m Sandy and this is my friend Jules) speak a form of Roma slang (Polari), which was used by the gay community to disguise what they were talking about- Kenneth Williams, the nasal one who is liable to explode how he is a proper actor, was a very repressed gay man, who apparently was disgusted with himself.
As I recall, William Hartnell in the early episodes was credited as playing "Dr. Who".
Well, that would be in keeping for the above advert.
Today, that credit writer would be mocked unmercifully.
On the right. Now THAT was broadcast gold. Nice to vada their eeks.
Yeah, I have to say, @LH, I really wondered about the other ads there and “whatever happened to …?”
