The R in Colonel

Why do we (in the US, at least) pronounce "colonel" as "kernal"?  Because, more or less, it used to be spelled that way …

(Which calls to mind one of the funniest lines from the old "Tick" cartoon, when the Tick and Arthur were pretending to be part of El Seed's corn army. They were asked, "What sort of corn soldiers are you?" To which Arthur, of course, replied, "We're colonels." Always makes me laugh.)

I've always wondered about this…..

The R in Colonel
A reader comments: I’ve often wondered where the “r” sound came from in colonel. I’m certain, in the original French, both Ls were pronounced as Ls–what happened?
