The reason why the room was pink was because on black and white film, hues of red become dark shades of black. Pink is the perfect balance to give it that dark creepy grey.

On a similar note, I've heard that Daleks in the original Doctor Who had large numbers painted on them so they could tell them apart for directing. The colors where chosen so that the numbers didn't show up on black and white film.
