There's apparently some dispute as to whether the garish wall colors were chosen for black-and-white effect, or if it was just left over from what had been previously shot on the set — but, regardless, it was a lot more ooky in grayscale.

The reason why the room was pink was because on black and white film, hues of red become dark shades of black. Pink is the perfect balance to give it that dark creepy grey.

On a similar note, I've heard that Daleks in the original Doctor Who had large numbers painted on them so they could tell them apart for directing. The colors where chosen so that the numbers didn't show up on black and white film.
