On the Naming of Beers

I'm sure that some true connoisseurs of brewing will point and laugh a my ignorance of beer nomenclature, but it seems like suddenly everyone (or at least all the micro-breweries) is putting out a "Helles" beer, I term I'd not encountered in the past but which, so far as I can tell, is just a light-colored, common lager, but with a lot classier name.

Is this the hot new craze / product category / trend in the beer world?

  1. My brother was making a raspberry beer, and it turned out pretty well, so far (it's a bit early to tell for sure, but the taste was good).

I'm not a beer man, at all. Ever. But if he makes it, I drinks it.
