That said, if you're basing so much of your rhetoric on things you claim the Founders said, a person who really cared about such things would actually try an confirm some of those items (heaven knows there are plenty of sources to try and do so online).
And certainly if someone were to approach you and tell you that, y'know, Jefferson / Franklin / Washington never said such a thing, then I'd expect you would remove such rhetoric from your speeches, literature, etc. Issue a retraction, if you want to be really above-board, but at least stop using it. If, in fact, you care about what the Founders themselves said, not just what sounds good in a sound bite.
