According to some tests, a number of Google mobile apps (including Hangouts, Plus, and the search bar) seem to work okay on different airline WiFi setups _without_ actually ponying up for data connectivity. Southwest, United, and GoGo services are all mentioned.

I definitely have to try this next time I fly.
