A Cold War techno-thriller, including my favorite Brit spy actor, Patrick McGoohan. Fun, fun stuff, and a movie I watch on a semi-regular basis.
A ★★★★ review of Ice Station Zebra (1968)
I’ve probably watched this Cold War epic seven or eight times, but it still holds up pretty well, the occasional FX glitch balanced by some spiffy submarine tech thrills. Alistair MacLean’s story — a US nuclear sub is sent to an arctic floating ice station that’s been hit by disaster, but of a classified enough nature to have a pair of spies and a platoon of Marines on board — manages in Jon Sturges’ direction to stay tense and taut, even with …
One of my all time fave "Cold War" type films.
Totally agree on your assessment of Jim Brown, as well.
+Mark Means He actually grated less on me this outing than he has in the past, just because it was clear he was going for the strong, silent type. It's just that he did it too well.
On the other hand, it's kind of a thankless role, in the overall scheme of things.
I've never seen it.
+Les Jenkins It's not a life-changing event, but I enjoy it. Esp. McGoohan's character and his relationship with the sub skipper.
I just saw this for the first time a few weeks ago. It was enjoyable, but I have no desire to see it again.
