They actually have a pretty comprehensive list here — especially if you disregard provisional or probationary or reserve or honorary members. (And, between Bendis and Hickman, the population of Avengers has skyrocketed in the past decade.)

The rankings are, as with all such things, heavily subjective, especially since it's just focused on how the heroes in question were as Avengers. On the other hand, some of the descriptions and reasoning given for the rankings is pretty funny.

I would not have put the Black Panther anywhere near the top of the list.
Hmmm. I would. Especially with the Avengers-related material of late. Maybe a third of the way down.
About right order wise, but I would move some around.
For instance I'd swap Luke Cage & Captain Marvel for The Hulk and The Wasp and Vision.
As an Avenger, I'd drop Hulk down way further on the list. I might drop Wasp down a bit (honestly, her Avengerly roles have never been all that critical). I would definitely put Vision , and probably Captain/Ms Marvel above Luke Cage, again, as far as their impact and participation in the Avengers.
The order given does suffer from importance being placed on more recent stories and creative teams.
+Dave Hill That is what I noticed. Since I've never heard of Captain Marvel or Luke Cage, but back in the day The Hulk, Wasp & Vision were right all part of the plot lines. So perhaps this is like Doctor Who, and you always remember your first Avengers.

I went back to read this again again at more length. I haven't followed the books for ~25 years, and clear a lot has changed.
And I was surprised to see Daredevil rank fairly high in that list. I might have to find a way to catch up on what I've missed. 🙂

+gregory hunt According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Avengers_members, Hellcat only had probationary status. Ditto Moondragon, D-Man, Deathcry, Silverclaw, Stingray, Machine Man, the other Spider-Woman, etc.
+Dan Eastwood There's been some really fine stuff in the Avengersverse in that time frame. I particularly enjoyed the Bendis run, which shook things up a lot but in kind of a fun way. (Hickman, though epic, feels like he's trying to out-Kirby Kirby, but without any sense of whimsy.) Prior to that, the Busiek / Perez era in the late 90s was covered in awesomesauce.
DD ran with the Avengers, but my recollection was it was fairly brief. He's just not a team player (much less so, in fact, that two other will-never-be-an-Avenger Avengers, Spider-Man and Wolverine).
Somewhere in the '80's DD was invited to join but turned them down. One issue guest appearance where only a blind man could save them. 😉
