The Thrill of Victory. The Agony of Defeat. (TV Cancellation Edition)

On the Thrill side: Agent Carter will be back for another season. I found it classy, fun, enjoyable.

On the Agony side: Forever has been canceled. Dammit! That's one we've kept up to date on with the DVR. I had no idea it was on the bubble. Dagnabbit. Enjoyed the characters, enjoyed the premise, enjoyed the story arcs — even when the individual episodes got a bit formulaic.

Sigh.

So it goes.

  1. Well turds. I'm going to miss "Forever." Sometimes I think ABC is like Fox Lite. They get something interesting so they put in a slot where it's up against something huge as a trial by fire then cancel it when it fails.

In the last few years, ABC has canceled far more shows that I watched than they have current shows that I watch. With Forever gone, that leaves a total of two (Counting Agents Carter and of SHIELD as a single show.)

I think I knew it was coming with the way the last episode ended. It closes the two biggest plot lines in ways that were ends, but not good ones. Almost as if they got the word with three days left to shoot so they crammed an ending together.

  2. Think about a season 2 of a show like Forever , set 75 years ago. You could tell all kinds of stories about this character's life in a completely different time, place, and setting. And think about season 3 set 50 years into the future. This is why the premise of this show, to me, was so fascinating. You could imagine this character living so many different lives, having so many different stories, and the setting around him can change totally. That gave the show so much potential in terms of possibilities of writing, and I think the main actor is talented enough to carry it through from one season to the next. All these actors used in the WWII flashbacks, for instance his former wife, could become regulars. It's too bad that they didn't see the potential in what this show could really have become. A whole season surrounding WWII events!! I like the characters that they had in it, they were really good. I also like the way they used the flashback scenes in his life to connect with the story of the main characters.

  3. +Charles Carrigan I'm not sure Forever would have worked as well as a long-term flashback or flashfoward show; grounding it in who Henry Morgan is today vs his painful learning experiences of the past (and uncertainty about the future) are all part of what made the show as strong as I felt it was.

That said, there was certainly room for more experimentation in the presentation.
