The Biblical injunctions against charging interest can be found in, among other places, Leviticus 25:35-37, Deuteronomy 15:1-11, Deuteronomy 23:19-20, Exodus 22:25, Luke 6:35. The Church condemned Christians being involved in "usury"; it was specifically noted as sinful in the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215. Eventually, apparently, Christians found the money involved too tempting to leave to the Jews alone.
