Fusion with a Twist

Tokamaks may be old hat, as a new generation Stellerator fusion reactor comes online.

I've been a huge fan of fusion as a long-term electrical source for a very long time. Hopefully the Wendelstein 7-X is a big step in that direction.

  1. That's all wonderful. Except: when do we get neutron resistant magnetic systems?
I studied these designs in the 60's…… Wow! Just wait until we get…… Superconducting magnets…… Super computers (mainframes at the time)…….. Oscilloscopes with >50khz bandwidth (kidding)……..
We still have an endothermic reaction at best.

  2. Yeah, my exposure was in the mid-70s. Fusion is one of those things that always seems like "just one more breakthrough and we'll be able to build a billion dollar facility that isn't just for research" … but, still, the promise is there.
