Okay, that was sort of a labored headline, but work with me …
The core of Donald Trump's speech in Warsaw was summed upon this tweet on his account:
❝ THE WEST WILL NEVER BE BROKEN. Our values will PREVAIL. Our people will THRIVE and our civilization will TRIUMPH! ❞
Aside from the podium-pounding ALL CAPS, it's a remarkable phrase, and the theme was repeated multiple times in his speech — a paean to Western Civilization, to Christendom, to an existential defense of Our Tribe against the hordes of the "south" and "east."
It's actually, as you dig, a disturbing bit of rhetoric in its implications, when moved from relatively homogeneous Poland to the melting pot of the US. If it's all about West vs Everyone Else, if West is synonymous with European and Christian, what does that mean for every American who doesn't fit into those neat heritage baskets? Are thy considered part of Us? Or Them? And if the latter, what will Trump's "triumph" actually look like?
The Racial and Religious Paranoia of Trump’s Warsaw Speech
When the president says being Western is the essence of America’s identity, he’s in part defining America in opposition to some of its own people.
I find this personally amusing, I mean it's with in my life time that the Poles are now considered "Western" and not subhuman papist untermench to be kept out of the country at all costs to save capitalism and keep America white! Also see all of Southern and Eastern Europe.
