Movie Review: "Spider-Man – Into the Spider-Verse"

Okay, that was just a damned fun movie.

And beautiful.

And funny.

And dramatic.

And beautiful.

I will confess, I've largely fallen away of Spider-series in my comic book reading over the past several years. I never got into Miles Morales. Never got into Spider-Gwen. Read neither the main titles nor the ones on the periphery. It all just seemed like a lot of stuff that might be good, but seemed to be a way to get me to buy many, many Spider-comics.

But this movie, pulling in elements from a lot of what's orbited around the Spider-corner of the Marvel comics universe in that period, is wonderful. And, by playing with multiple dimensions, it lets the writers and artists play with a variety of styles, influences, tropes, etc.

Sony Animation's new means of combining 3D CG art and more conventional 2D detail is truly lovely, providing much more interesting style and letting the animators do some fun and fascinating things. It's really triffic, and it deserves the awards it's been getting.

I realize I'm a little late in waxing lyrical over this film — it was relegated to a tiny, 2D theater in the back of my local multiplex — but I definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it, and it's probably worth seeing on a big theatre screen. I've also been told it's Spectacular (perhaps even Amazing) in 3D. Regardless, I'll definitely be picking up a copy for home viewing in the future.

  1. That.

    Was.

    Amazing.

The best animation of 2018, it was so layered and gorgeous. +Dave Hill you should go and see in 3D.

And I will say the best praise for it is I now want read TPB’s of some of the other ‘verses.

The little Easter eggs (eg Romita Ramen) made me feel like I was in CoH again.

And yes, I teared up with the Stan Lee cameo.
