“Don’t Be That Guy”

You will get there sooner or later. You might get there a bit sooner by going too fast for the road conditions — but you might get there a lot later, if at all. And the same is true for those around you, in your vehicle and in others.

Four wheel drive doesn’t mean four wheel stop. Power to all wheels doesn’t mean that snow and ice somehow increase their friction and will let you turn on a dime.

In dangerous conditions, don’t feel “social pressure” to go faster so that the cars behind you can go faster. They may very well be happy to be just following you — and, regardless, their convenience does not trump your safety.

See that guy in the car sitting in the ditch / snow drift / center divider, or spinning around over there, or with the tow crew and insurance inspector standing by? Don’t be that guy.

This has been a public service announcement from me.

  1. Every Winter I am more than thankful for the ABS on the Ford. Several time when folks were doing silly things yesterday afternoon on the way home it saved my bacon.

But then the 4WD also made it so I could scoot right along and get stuck like the Ambulance, cop cars, Fire Truck, many many 2wd cars, fuel truck mail truck, Dump Truck (which was th scariest of the bunch since he was trying to go up hill…and was going at 45 degree angle across east bound 120th and making his way into west bound 120th. 0.0) and trucks with nothing in the bed.

Really the worst part of the driving was the playing dodge-um with everyone. Anything with an up hill was a maze as you wound your way through the stuck cars.

  2. Margie’s favorite comment from someone on a news interview who has an apartment window facing a large hill in the area. “When you’re at the bottom of the hill and you can see a dozen other cars that couldn’t make it to the top, why would you dream of being the next to try it?” 🙂
