It’s the Geek Rivalries meme:

The rules: You must choose one. If you like both, decide which one you like better. If you don’t like either of them, figure out which you dislike less.

  1. Star Trek or Babylon 5? Babylon 5, no question.
  2. Windows or Linux? Have to go with Windows, since I have no experience with Linux worth mentioning. I certainly root for a strong Linux presence in the marketplace.
  3. Windows or Macintosh? I have a fondness for the Mac going back many years, and design-wise I admire it most. On the other hand, I’m a lot more comfortable with Windows, Have to vote Mac here.
  4. Farscape or Stargate? Farscape. Never have gotten much into Stargate — no particular objection to it, but it seems terribly pedestrian compared to the craziness and cliff-hangers on Farscape. Hmmm. I need to start watching those DVDs I borrowed. In my copious free time.
  5. Linux or BSD? Linux, but that’s splitting hairs.
  6. Intel or AMD? AMD as the underdog. Nothing particularly wrong with either.
  7. Star Trek or Star Wars? Star Trek. Star Wars went wrong exactly where B5 went right: a strong creative vision that drove the final product. ST had no such vision (esp. post-Roddenberry), and so was neither driven marvelously upwards or terribly downwards beyond a single episode or two.
  8. Firefox or Internet Explorer? Firefox, duh.
  9. Firefox or Opera? Firefox, but my experience with Opera has been very limited.
  10. WordPress or Movable Type? Movable Type, but that’s at least in part due to familiarity and commitment. Plenty of good WP sites out there.
  11. Marvel or DC? Marvel still stirs the blood from the old days, but I’ve been enjoying DC more for quite a number of years.
  12. Neanderthal or Neandertal? Neanderthal (I haven’t gotten pedantic enough to pronounce it the latter way_.
  13. Slashdot or Digg? Slashdot, I guess. I don’t really frequent either.
  14. Anime: Dub or Sub? Subtitled, which is one reason I don’t watch as much anime as I’d like.
  15. Dr. Pepper or Mountain Dew? Dr. Pepper, if compelled to choose. I’ll take Coke (or Pepsi) over either.

Some of these are so non-issues to me that it causes me to doubt my geekiness. On the other hand, they didn’t ask about “GURPS or D20?” or “WoW or Everquest?” or “Penny Arcade or PvP?” and the comic book question was terribly simplistic (“Batman or Superman?” “Avengers or JL?” “Thanos or Darkseid?”) so I guess I still have some areas of geekiness I’m more into than the test makers.

What were you doing ten years ago?

In March 1996, we were still getting things unpacked in the house (being just two months in), and wondering where the hell we were going to put all our books. I was hard at work as the IT support manager at the local office, struggling with the remaining Windows 3.x machines and Novell 3.x servers; indeed, I believe this month was when we had an all-week series of server crashes and similar in-every-night brouhaha. Babylon 5 was in the middle of its 3rd Season — Earth was plunging into tyranny, the Nightwatch was making its moves, and Londo was getting prophecies told to him of his destiny,

What were you doing one year ago?

In March 2005, I was celebrating the wrap-up of our rector search, struggling with a flaky cable modem, and was (on this date) just back from a lengthy business trip at which Sarbanes-Oxley compliance was discussed at length.

Five snacks you enjoy:

Well-salted tortilla chips with a smoky chipotle or roasted pepper salsa. Cheesy rice cakes. Pepper slices. M&Ms. Cookies. All sorts of other crap that really isn’t any good for me.

Five songs to which you know all the lyrics:

“The Vatican Rag” (Lehrer); “Rent” (Pet Shop Boys); “Pilate’s Dream” (Weber/Rice); “Hallelujah” (Handel); “The House Carpenter” (Trad./Baez)

There are eleventy-dozen more, of course.

Five things you would do if you were a millionaire:

Invest enough to be supported the rest of my life, and to pay for Katherine’s college ed. Quit my job. Write. Goof off. Do volunteer work down at the church.

Five things you like doing:

Reading. Playing CoH. Playing with Katherine. Being with Margie. Blogging. Singing. Yes, that’s six things.

Five things you would never wear again:

Can’t think of much, under the right circumstances. There’s some 70s-era stuff (polyester suits) I wouldn’t wear without it being an intentional parody. Now, can’t ever wear again is a different question.

Five favorite toys:

Computer. Action figures. Badminiton paddle. Small metal airplanes. Major Matt Mason (et al.)

In theory I’m supposed to tag five other bloggers with this. But the heck with it — do it if you want.

Andreas Katsulas, RIP.

Katsulas had a varied movie and TV career, but the geek factor for him stemmed from …

… his portrayal of the One-Armed Man in the Harrison Ford remake of The Fugitive.

… his occasional appearance as Romulan Commander Tomalak on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

… and, most of all, in his pivitol role of Narn Ambassador G’kar on Babylon 5.

The latter was what brought him to my attention. He was one of a very few actors to go through the entire series (1994-98), and his nuanced and evolving character was part of the bedrock of that show. Evidently a consummate professional as an actor, he convincingly carried G’kar along from poncy schemer to fierce warrior to unexpected religious and political icon.

He will be missed, though his work will remain.

“I have history of taking off my gloves …”

This is a bit dated, but B5 fans (and BNL fans, and especially BNL+B5 fans) will get a hoot out of it. (via Orac)…

Yet another lengthy list of the Top 50 SF Shows of All Time. Not bad, but …

  • Les is irked by ST:TOS making #1 on the list. As a ground-breaker, and as ongoing (if more than a bit cheesy) entertainment, I don’t cavil at that nod. However …
  • ST:TNG as #3? Give me a break. Especially with …

  • B5 as #5? B5 is not without faults, especially early on, but season by season it beat the pants off of TNG for story, characterization, and sfx.

  • Battlestar Galactica (the new one) is certainly worthy, but it’s way too early on (and we’re way too close to it) to give it the #2 place.

  • For the record, Xena was fantasy, not sf. Actually, Twilight Zone was fantasy at least as often, but I’m willing to stretch the point. For that matter, Quantum Leap was pretty much fantasy, too. As was Buffy (which gets beat by … Andromeda?!)

  • Alien Nation should have ranked higher (certainly much higher than Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea).

  • Firefly (#17) gets beat out by ST:Voyager (#14) and, for the love of God, Logan’s Run (#15)? Jesus wept.

Okay, so it is kind of bad. But rantworthy, which is almost as good, and it’s an fun list to read through (if you ignore the order).

Cool. Though I don’t think Margie’s going to pony up $2500-odd bucks (and this 5 days before the auction is up) for that Fathers Day gift …

The current (over the past year) iteration of efforts to get a B5 feature film off the ground appear to be dead. From the B5JMS list (posted by JMS himself):

The rule of thumb in Hollywood is that for every thousand scripts that get written, only a few dozen get into development, and out of those, only one will ever get made … if that.

A little over a year ago, I was approached by a company that wanted to make a Babylon 5 movie. They optioned the rights, and commissioned a script. (It’s worth mentioning that I, not WB, own the rights to a B5 movie. When we were negotiating the original B5 deal — by whose terms I will never see a dime in profit — the one thing they did let me have were the movie rights, figuring they’d never be worth anything in the long run.)

Anyway…on December 27th of 2003, the script for “The Memory of Shadows” was turned in, and the process began of trying to make the deal work with all the various forces involved. It is, to say the least, a very difficult process on any movie where the studio does not directly take the financial reins. In terms of B5, Warner’s position was esssentially, “We only do big-budget movies with big names, so you’re on your own.” If there were big-name movie actors in the film, they’d get behind it; without that, things become very problematic, especially as far as the financing was concerned. You much have to put together a consortium of international interests and business plans rivaled in complexity only by the Allied invasion of Normandy Beach.

Nonetheless, every attempt was made by the people involved to get this deal in place. This was not being done by Doug or myself, but rather by the company/individuals who approached us and optioned the rights. At times, it seemed we were inches away from a deal … stages were reserved at Elstree, actors were contacted, a director was in place, the script went through many revisions, a few key staff were hired, again not by me … it was really a year-long roller coaster ride.

During that time, the people involved, with every good intention, tried very hard to pull the necessary pieces together on the deal. The option expired in late December 2004, but I renewed it without cost, to give those involved more time to try and make things work.

In the end, however, the deal could not be put together, and it did not look as if that was going to change at any point in the foreseeable future. So the option has reverted, and to all intents and purposes, the project has dead ended. Nor do I think this particular incarnation will arise again at any point in the future, though prognostication has always been a tricky art, especially if you have to do it without the benefit of hindsight.

This was not the first time someone’s taken a run at a B5 feature film, and it will not be the last. Eventually it will happen, because such things are simply inevitable. If they can do a Brady Bunch movie, you can be sure that sooner or later, somebody’s going to do a B5 movie.

The only thing I can say without equivocation is that when that day comes, as the rights-holder, I will make darned sure that it’s done right, because I’d rather have no B5 movie than one that doesn’t live up to what fans and I myself would want to see.

To that end … I can wait.

Well, rats.

From Joe Straczynski’s B5JMS group (Digest Vol. 24, Iss. 4):

I don’t normally do this…in fact, I don’t think I’ve ever done this in any group before, because I’ve always kind of waited to make sure it was worth doing, and that it would make a difference.

I’m sending this to both the B5 folks reading this and any Trek fans looking on.

From the B5JMS List:

I know I’ve been absent for a while now, but there are reasons, especially in regards to B5:TMoS*. In a project of this nature, and this size, there’s stage one (let’s do this) stage two (let’s make everybody’s deal) and stage three (making it). We’re hip-deep in stage two just now, and it’s taking a freaking long amount of time to get through it all. Stage two is also the most unnerving and nerve-wracking stage when there’s a lot of money involved, as there is in this situation.

So every day is a case of “Are we there yet?” and being told yes…almost.

I swear, it’s the kind of thing that could lead a monk to murder.

Thing of it is…there’s a LOT happening right now in the B5 universe, on a multitude of fronts, some of it in response to TMoS, some of it coming up completely on its own. All I can say at this moment is that if you’ve been waiting for new stuff in the B5 universe, you may be getting your wish in spades very soon.

Soon, I promise, all will be made clear. I don’t like being Mr. Mysterioso on this, but if I say too much, the-powers-that-be will use my head to make a 2.35:1 sized hole in the wall.

* the exact meaning of “TMoS” has not yet been revealed …

Other info on other stuff, too, including steady progress on an upcoming run on Dr. Strange — which should be a blast.

Note: Not a Bullfrog

On the “Hmmmmm, interesting” front, I note that the first season of Jeremiah is coming out on DVD. That’s the Showtime series created by Joe Straczynski, erstwhile creator/producer/writer of B5.

JMS is labeled as the creator, but it’s acutally based on the Belgian graphic novel series by Hermann Huppen. The basic premise:

Set in the future, the series focuses on Jeremiah (Luke Perry) who must navigate his way through a world populated by the survivors of a deadly epidemic that spared only those who had not yet reached puberty. Now those same survivors must find their way in a decadent civilization and attempt to create a new world order of hope.
Jeremiah, a loner by nature, is joined by the naïve yet colorful Kurdy (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) on a quest to find the mysterious “Valhalla Sector”. Together they set out on a journey during which they discover rival social factions at war and young people who must make decisions without wisdom from those who lived before them.

So, a classic “differerent world” sort of episodic TV sf show, with plenty of JMSsy goodness.

Has any regular reader here actually seen the thing? Me and mine, no Showtime have we. So I’m kind of curious — not quite enough curious for $68, but I could be possibly convinced …

Hmmmm. Firefly news? Check. Cool new movie news? Check. That just leaves …

Aha! Babylon 5 news.

From the B5JMS List yesterday, a few tidbits:

  • New DVD set next year with all of the stray B5 movies, including the pilot, with JMS commentary. (Alas, I fear still with the revised music on the pilot. I prefer the Stewart Copeland soundtrack myself.) My Wish List is adjusted accordingly.
  • All of Crusade (a flawed but promising series) also out in a box set.

  • Some sort of “eep” secret project about to come to fruition:

On the B5 front, there has been something of rather substantial proportion that’s finally gone from talk to money, such that I’m now working frantically to meet some deadlines, but there’s nothing I can say about this until after January 15th, probably closer to the end of that month.
The only thing I can say is that phase one of the new project is a go, hence the furious writing schedule at this end of things […]. I’ve been writing my little brains out.
I know the immediate result of this will be speculation, but if we could keep that to a low roar on the nets to avoid precluding anything, that would be a wonderfulness. But trust me: I wouldn’t go on about something in this way if it wasn’t a significant development. Just trust me on this one for a bit and hold fire until further word.
(Longtime followers of the various news groups know that an eep means that something significant has happened, but that I can’t talk about it…the eep is just a way of saying, on the QT, that something has, indeed, happened and it’s real, not just speculation or maybe-gonna-happens. So on that basis, you may consider this an eep.)

Joe is notorious about not blabbing about things until they are done deals. So one can but wait eagerly.

Or, as Doyce put it:

Haven’t you ever wanted to compare the relative size of an X-wing to a Babylon 5 StarFury, or a Starship Troopers Plasma Bug to an Imperial AT-AT?

So Joe Straczynski, the certifiable genius of a writer/producer, has been working on a new project proposal for the SciFi Channel called “Polaris.” Sounds like a slam-dunk, right? I mean, how could they possibly turn down an opportunity from the creator of Babylon 5?

With the patented SciFi Channel stupidity, apparently.

On Polaris…we got down to one of three projects of which one or two would be greenlighted for production. It went down to the wire, but finally SFC decided that the premise of Polaris was a little too science fictiony, when they were looking to go for ideas that had more immediate mainstream appeal. So even though they felt that Polaris was the best written of the projects they had in development, they went for a project about intergalactic (not interstellar, intergalactic) vampires called “Bloodsuckers.” It is, to be fair, one of those concepts that, when you hear it, you get it, there isn’t a lot of background needed.

Yeah. Can’t have any of that “science fictiony” stuff on the SciFi Channel, can we? I mean, that’s the real reason we dropped Farscape. We need to go for that mainstream stuff, like all the other “intergalactic vampire” shows out there.

Intergalactic vampires. Yeah, that’ll rock the world.

As Bugs used to say, “Whadda buncha maroons.”

Actually this was one of those Q&A chain letters that my mom passed on, but since e-mail is so Last Millennium, I thought I’d do it here (abridged) …

1. What time is it? 8:39AM MDT (GMT-6)

2. Name as it appears on your birth certificate: David Christopher Hill

3. Nickname(s): “Dave,” “***Dave,” “Three-Star Dave.”

4. Parents names: Hal & Gloria

5. Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake: Now, see, here’s a tough one, not out of vanity, but because age and birth date is one of those Significant Things that folks use in Identity Theft (birthplace, favorite pet, mother’s maiden name are others). Somebody who really wanted to sift through things could probably figure it out, but there are a few intentionally misleading bits I’ve used in the past, too. So … somewhere between forty and forty-five.

6. Date that you regularly blow them out? See #5. I blow them out in early January, but the exact date varies, depending on when Margie takes me out or makes me a cake.

7. Pets: Two cats, one toddler. Squirrels in the back yard, grackles in the bird feeder. No errant raccoons at the moment.

8. Eye color: Hazel

9. Hair color: Brown-grey

10. Piercing: (Shudders.) No.

11. Tattoos: (Shudders some more.) No.

12. How much do you love your job: It has its days. I’m kind of struggling at the moment managing a remote group — “out of sight, out of mind.”

13. Favorite color: Cobalt Blue

14. Hometown: See #5. I was born up in the San Francisco ‘burbs. However, I was raised almost entirely in Southern California, in the east San Gabriel Valley.

15. Current Residence: Centennial, Colo.

16. Favorite food: Rum Raisin Ice Cream.

17. Been to Africa? Nope. There are some areas I’d like to visit — safari stuff, Egypt, Morocco. But it doesn’t look likely any time soon, for a variety of financial and security reasons.

18. Been toilet papering? Nope. Ol’ Stick-in-the-mud Me.

19. Loved somebody so much it made you cry? Yes.

20. Been in a car accident? Yup. No serious injuries, but way more thrills and excitement than I’m really looking for in my life.

21. Croutons or bacon bits? Yes, please, thanks!

22. Sprite or 7 UP? When pressed, Sprite. 7Up is too sweet. On the other hand, I’d much prefer a ginger beer, a Barq’s root beer, or a Coke.

23. Favorite Movie(s): Sorry, that exceeds my bandwidth here. Though at the moment, I’d have to rank LotR up there pretty damned high.

24. Favorite Holiday: Christmas. Family, friends, gifts given, gifts received, and Lots of Spiritual Stuff to boot.

25. Favorite day of the week: Friday. Half day off, the weekend is coming, and either I have a bachelor night at home (if Margie’s gaming), or I have a game I’m going to (and get to sleep in on Saturday!).

26. Favorite word or phrases? “No problem” and “Howdy,” I suspect.

27. Favorite Toothpaste: Aim. Or Crest. Actually, I’ve stopped having a real favorite.

28. Favorite Restaurant: Hey, this question sounds vaguely familiar … Probably the knee-jerk reaction would be Le Central.

29. Favorite Flowers: Irises.

30. Favorite Drink: Gin martini, very dry (6:1), with a twist.

31. Favorite sports to watch: Probably golf. This is not something I spend a lot of time watching.

32. Preferred type of ice cream: See #16.

33. Favorite Sesame Street Character: I was a bit too old for Sesame Street growing up, and Katherine is not really into it as of yet. So I really couldn’t say. They mostly seem kinda goofy.

35. Favorite Fast Food Restaurant: Tokyo Joe’s.

36. When was your last hospital visit? Wow. Many, many years. Inguinal hernias when I was in the 3rd and 4th Grades. Unless you count visiting someone else in the hospital. In which case it would be when Doyce was in. Somewhere in-between those would be when we stayed over at the hospital after Katherine was born.

37. What color is your bedroom carpet? Beige.

38. How many times did you fail your driver’s test? None. Woo-hoo!

39. Who is the last person you got email from before this? Kelley.

40. Have you ever been convicted of a crime? Never convicted, no … heh heh heh …

41. Which single store would you choose to max out your credit card? Restoration Hardware. Retro-geeky joy.

42. What do you do most often when you are bored? Work on my blog …

43. Name the person that you are friends with that lives the farthest: A wide variety of friends are scattered across the US, and even some we’ve subsequently visited in London. Margie’s godfather lives in Thailand.

But for decently close friends whom I have actually met in person, off the top of my head I’d say it would be Kelley, in Chicago.

44. Most annoying thing people ask me: “Say, that must be a good book, eh?”

45. Bedtime: Usually sometime between 9 and 10 (!), usually driven by Margie. (Which is not a bad thing, since (a) I get up at 5 a.m., and (b) without her restraint, I’d usually stay up until midnight ….)

46. Who will respond the quickest to this e-mail [blog]? Actually commenting? Probably Jenn, who, bless ‘er, seems to hit this page multiple times a day. Actually writing a blogged version themselves? Probably Doyce.

47. Who is the person you sent this to that is least likely to respond? Margie is probably the reader most likely not to write her own answers to the questions, though she may likely comment on mine.

48. Favorite all time TV shows: As defined by my willingness to tape the darned things: Babylon 5. The Outer Limits (TOS). The recent WB Batman/Superman/Justice League cartoons.

49. Last person(s) you went out to dinner with: Margie, just the other evening.

50. Last Movie you saw? See previous post. 🙂

51. What CD is playing right now? None. But Out of the Box is on TV, entertaining Kitten.

52. What is your favorite fragrance? Sauteeing onions and garlic.

53. What are your favorite Hobbies? Blogging, RPGing, Reading.

54. Personal habit I would most like to change: Procrastination.
