A "gritty" Star Wars tale

Yes, the review is spoiler-free, aside from the broadest strokes of what it's about and a cursory look at the characters. And it sounds just like the Star Wars movie I'm looking for.

Waiting for Sunday eagerly …

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story review – Spoiler Free | The Disney Blog
If you’ve seen “Star Wars: A New Hope,” then you know the story of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” It’s right there in the first 30 seconds as the large yellow copy scrolls across the screen. “It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden…

Looks like a different cast, though, which doesn't bode well. Except it looks like that Darth Vader guy will be back — awesome!

The "real" Darth Vader burned helmet

David Prowse has the Real Goods (fished from the Return of the Jedi pyre itself). Not sure what Kylo Ren is mooning over, but …

(Hadn't realized the helmet was fiberglass, vs. plastic. Interesting.)

Where's Rey? (and other Murky Merchandising Mysteries)

If this "anonymous source" at Lucasfilm is correct, and the dearth of Rey-oriented toys, games, clothing, etc. was driven from Lucasfilm/Disney itself, that would be deeply irritating. Of course, the Disney merchandising execs have a mindset of Boy Stuff (Pirates!) vs Girl Stuff (Princesses!), but it's still gobsmacking that a movie that so prominently featured a female protagonist would be so fumbled.

Or is it?

'Corroborating the Lucasfilm insider’s assertions is John Marcotte, founder of the non-profit Heroic Girls. “I’ve spoken with Disney people, and they were completely blindsided by the reaction to the new Star Wars characters,” he tells Boehm. “They put a huge investment into marketing and merchandizing the Kylo Ren character. They presumed he would be the big breakout role from the film. They were completely surprised when it was Rey everyone identified with and wanted to see more of. Now they’re stuck with vast amounts of Kylo Ren product that is not moving, and a tidal wave of complaints about a lack of Rey items.”'

Kylo Ren? Emo Vader-wannabe? He was meant to be the breakout character? He is the true protagonist-of-focus in the movie?

Well … that's not beyond reason. Certainly a number of the emotional heartbeats in the story as it showed up on the screen focus on KR. And if the original two trilogies were about the Fall and Rise of Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader, someone might have intentionally designed things such that Kylo Ren would be the core character in the third trilogy.

Worth some discussion over a few beers, at least.

If this whole thing is accurate, let's hope that the rumors about why the next movie is seeing some rewriting is in reaction to how Rey (and Finn) have taken off as characters, and (once again) hope that, come Star Wars VIII, we don't have to ask "Where's Rey" again.

Star Wars: The Sequel That Should Have Been

Stephen Byrne does a very nice job on this (sadly) non-canonical 14-page sequel to The Force Awakens.

Forgiving Star Wars its scientific sins

Of course. Star Trek is extrapolation. Star Wars is myth. Star Trek is the Cold War and the Space Program. Star Wars is Arthur and Campbell. Star Trek draws wrath when it breaks scientific plausibility. Star Wars draws wrath when it violates what feels right.

You don't expect Zeus to obey the laws of physics. You don't worry if Mount Doom is vulcanologically correct. And you don't worry if the Force exceeds the speed of light or if laser swords can actually exist.

Movie Review: "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015)

A good movie, and I want more. And, most importantly, I feel no need to track down J J Abrams and commit violence upon his person, so I think it's a win-win for everyone. This was the Star Wars movie I was hoping for.

4 stars (and a heart) out of 5

[In the linked review, I've tried to talk around plot spoilers as much as possible, but ears that desire to be completely virgin should probably just bookmark this for now. Give it through this coming weekend and we'll talk a bit more openly.]

On the Forever Franchise of "Star Wars"

Frankly, if they are all (or even mostly) as good as "The Force Awakens, " I have no problem with an endless series of Star Wars movies. Or Marvel movies. Or whatever.

I mean, we don't have problems with a TV show being 13 or 26 episodes in a single year, or of shows being renewed for another season. Nobody says, "OMG, another episode of that show this week, too? Why can't Hollywood give us different stand-alone TV shows each week, instead of endless sequels? Where is their creativity?"

Aside from the time spans involved, it's much the same thing with a movie series. And if they start to suck, the box office will drop and they'll stop making them.

There's nothing evil about a movie franchise, even if it includes associated one-off movies in the shared universe. And if a given franchise is not your cuppa, well, it's not like there is a shortage of entertainment out there to watch (or read, or listen to, or play) instead.

The movie had great word of mouth before and during the previews, which definitely helped. And the word of mouth from this weekend will definitely drive those numbers upward.

A short, non-spoiler review of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"

A worthy successor, with modern sensibilities and technology and technique, to the original trilogy. Not perfect, but quite satisfying, and a lot of fun. My hat's off to you, Mr Abrams.

(We ended up, perforce, seeing it in 3D, which was done well — not essential, but a nice add.)

More to follow … but not tonight.
