"Movie Review: "Revenge of the Sith" (2005)

I'm not sure even another decade will make it worth rewatching this again. There are a few nice bits, but, like chocolate chips sprinkled in a past-its-expiry-date casserole from the bowels of the fridge, it's too little against the wobbly plot, crappy dialog, and bad acting by (and/or direction of) Hayden Christensen (primarily, though not exclusively).

Full review: http://letterboxd.com/three_star_dave/film/star-wars-episode-iii-revenge-of-the-sith/

I blame the cynicism and sense of decline in America squarely on our societal disappointment in the Prequels. 'Nuff said.

Score: 1 star out of 5

Looking forward to "Force Awakens"

Yeah, +Kay Hill seems appropriately interested, and +Margie Kleerup is thumbs-up about it … but I know who’s going to be bouncing up and down on their tip-toes with frenzied glee come Saturday evening …

Movie Review: "Attack of the Clones" (2002)

The rewatch continues!

This one ekes out 2 stars out of 5 largely because (a) lots of eye candy and (b) the Obi-Wan and Jango Fett parts are pretty fun. If only we'd gotten a movie focused on that, instead of the galaxy's worst romance.

Movie Review: "The Phantom Menance" (1999)

Yes, we're trying to watch the Prequels, now, too — simply because +Kay Hill never saw them except the first (and parts of the second via the Lego game adaptation).

http://letterboxd.com/three_star_dave/film/star-wars-episode-i-the-phantom-menace/

Summary: Some beautiful set pieces, but a story crippled by clashing tones of seriousness and slapstick, as well as some dumb plotting. 2.5/5 stars (and they don't get any better from here).

Putting to rest worries about "The Force Awakens"

I have not even read the review below, but I did read Doyce's excerpt from it, and I trust Scalzi, so … yay!

Originally shared by +Doyce Testerman:

I have not seen the movie yet. I won't until Monday.

This review removes almost all the apprehension I've been feeling.

"Star Wars is that friend of yours who you haven’t seen in a while, who was in a long-term relationship where everything was cool for a while and then things just plain went to hell, and the last time you saw them, they’d kind of hit the bottom. Now you’re seeing them again for the first time in years and before they show up you’re humming a little mantra that goes please please please please don’t let this be awkward and weird like it was the last time we saw each other."

"And then they show up! And they look great. They sound great. You talk to them and slip into the groove with them, and they catch you up on what’s new, including their new relationship with this fab-sounding person who seems to be doing good things for them. And you suddenly realize that for the first time in years your friend actually seems happy. They’re not exactly their old self again — who ever is, after all those years? — but the things you always loved about them are there once more, and you’re so happy to see them happy again that you almost want to cry."

"So, yeah: If you’re a Star Wars fan, that’s how you’re going to feel about The Force Awakens."

My Non-Spoilery Review of The Force Awakens | Whatever
Super-short version: It’s not bad! Best since the original trilogy and arguably better than at least one of those. You’ll probably have a whole lot of fun with this film. Non-super-short version: Star Wars is that friend of yours who you haven’t seen in a while, who was in a long-term …

A Denver line for the next "Star Wars" movie

Well, the next one in May 1980, that is: The Empire Strikes Back.

Originally shared by +BackintheUSA:

Movie Review: "Return of the Jedi" (1983)

So it's part of the original trilogy, so that's a good thing. But the infusion of excessive cuteness (Ewoks), and broad humor (Han) drag it down, and the psychodrama of Luke facing both Vader and the Emperor never quite gels. In my current) mind, it's the weakest of the original three (3/5 stars).

The Dark Side of the Force Wants YOU!

One of the amusing things about the revival in Star Wars popular fandom with the new movie coming out (THIS WEEK!) is the revisionist views of the Empire vs the Rebels, the Jedi vs the Sith, the Light Side of the Force vs the Dark Side.

In some ways, it echoes the iconoclasm over "real life" heroes and institutions. It's not really that the Dark Side is all that good (both the Emperor and Vader … and, heck, the whole Empire does a lot of dickish things) but that that the Light Side is itself so dubious in its morality (lies, mind control, lies, political manipulation, lies, killing, lies, etc.).

There's a sociology thesis in there somewhere, I'm sure.

5 Reasons The Dark Side Isn’t As Bad As You Think | Cracked.com
How exactly is the Dark Side ‘evil’ again? It really shouldn’t have been that hard for Vader to convince Luke to join his cause.

Movie Review: "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980)

For my money the best of the original trilogy, with a more epic scope than the original and less cuteness/slapstick than the third. 4/5 stars (and a "favorite" heart).

Who wants a girly-girl toy about a girl? Obviously boys don't, right?

Disney seems to think having a key female protagonist works just fine. And the makes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens seem more than okay with highlighting her in the trailers for the film.

But, hey, Hasbro (and, apparently, Target) knows best that boys will never, ever, never ask for a set of toys that has a (gasp) girl in it. And they know that girls never, ever, never ask for (gasp) Star Wars toys, right?

And so, they know that nobody will ever, ever, ever notice leaving out that character, Rey. So they can fill in the gap with a couple of generic bad guys.

And Target thought that was so cool, that was the Target Exclusive action figure set they ordered from Hasbro.

It's remarkable to think that, after all the grief to date, this remains an issue.

Trailers and Spoilers and Movies (oh my!)

So +Les Jenkins had a moment of droll levity at my expense in posting the below cartoon — though I'd already posted my own squeeing at the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer.

I have to give them credit: I did not have a sense that the trailer actually spoiled anything, even as it tantalized with so many fun images and portentious snippets of dialog.

That said, I will probably avoid any further trailers released until the December opening of the film. I'm already hyped, and I don't want to know any more. (Well, I want to know more, but will wait for the movie.)

Of course, any spoilers that do come out from the next trailer are likely to show up, um, here on the Intertubes ("Did you see Chewie and Leia snogging!? Talk about steam heat!"), but that's the danger one lives with when you live on the edge like I do.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" — I am SO in

It is altogether possible that the movie will suck horribly — but the trailers are so, so good, hitting every note the way I want it to be hit.

(Although apparently J J Abrams has graduated from Lens Flare to Embers In The Air as his visual signature.)

No, but seriously, the trailer, at least, works the nostalgia, the new slightly grimy realism, the menace, the taunting hope, just … letter perfect.
