Two gripes on CO – Travel Powers and Talking

I love the Acrobatics travel power. It’s coolness in the extreme — the leaping, the tumbling, all that. It’s even better in a bestial stance, but even for normals it’s extremely keen.

I’ll never take it agan. Nor Super-Speed. Possibly not Super-Jump (on the principle that what goes up must come down), though I remain open on that; Teleport might be similarly of concern.

Here’s my problem. Aggro. As in, “there are angry mobs everywhere, you can’t avoid them, and as soon as they aggro you as you run / caper past, you slow down, and they shoot you from afar and follow you to the ends of the Earth.”

I was running Kitsune in Canada (Phase II) yesterday. We had fishy business up by the river, and it was a freaking epic quest for me to get from Steelhead to mission sites, time and again. I felt like I was infiltrating behind enemy lines. Meanwhile, Margie’s Surprise waggled her little fairy wings and flitted above the fray. “Do you need me to watch over for you?”

Feh.

If Travel Powers didn’t suddenly slow down when you aggro or when you’re aggroed, but only when you actually attack someone, it wouldn’t be a problem. As it stands, though, it’s a serious pain, and one that I can easily avoid by simply not taking some delightful powers.

Related to that — is it too much to ask for radio messaging with contacts? Even CoX realized a long time back that having to trot back to the contact every time is a real Quality of LIfe annoyance, and given the above concerns, it can be hazardous to one’s health, too.

Sure, the desert is subject to radiation interference, and the auroras in the tundra are something fierce … but surely we can get a secure radio contact with Dr. Fred or Lt. Joe-Bob after we run a mish or two for them. Not to mention Justiciar …

  1. Take Tunnelling, it’s the bestest travel power evah.

    No Aggro.

Can recon an area with ease.

Quicker than flying for the most part (barring walls. ).

    Oh….and no aggro. =P

Bonus, you can take a advantage that gives you limited armor when you come out of your hole.

  2. It looks very cool. It just doesn’t conceptually work for anyone I have. As of yet.

  3. CO feels kind of like CoH Lite. I may have erred getting the lifetime subscription. Oh, well. At least the game itself only cost me $13 (roomie left behind tons of Playstation games that I traded in for credit). 🙂

  4. It seems that gameplay is of a “bare bones” type. I use my big power, then spam the little one until i can use the big one again. I can pick up a “power-up”, but it seems I am limited to whichever one I flew into last. I talked to an NPC who had a mission available, but I couldn’t take it (Level requirement? Bug? Something else?).

Admittedly, I have just the one character, and he’s only level 13. It may simply be that I haven’t availed myself of enough of what’s there. On the other hand, the game hasn’t done much to let me know what else I can do. On the gripping hand, I may have been as confused by CoH at this point in that gaming experience; my memory is rather hazy of my early days there (but all too vivid regarding the events that led to my departure from that game).

I would be surprised if CO supplants CoX for you, Dave. Of course, Cryptic may be planning hefty upgrades to the game, as we saw for CoH. In any event, I think this is the sort of game that I will enjoy dabbling in, although it won’t consume me as LotRO has.

  5. BD, did you subscribe to CO, or is your knowledge strictly from beta?

  6. It seems that gameplay is of a “bare bones” type. I use my big power, then spam the little one until i can use the big one again.

Which doesn’t strike me as that much different as having in CoX an attack chain, esp. at low levels when you have only 2-3 key powers.

I can pick up a “power-up”, but it seems I am limited to whichever one I flew into last.

I don’t think this is true, but I’m not sure.

I talked to an NPC who had a mission available, but I couldn’t take it (Level requirement? Bug? Something else?).

That’s a bug/issue that multiple people have complained about. I do note that in CoX I am not infrequently sent off to a contact when I finish up another contact’s content, only to be told by contact #2 “Go away and come back at Level [something divisible by 5].”

On the other hand, the game hasn’t done much to let me know what else I can do.

    Agreed.

You also had a larger, more informed community (and a plethora of online guides) to consult.

It seems unlikely, though it’s been the case so far. I’m not sure where the MMO winds are taking me …

  7. While I applaud the addition of the Power House and the ability to test abilities within its walls without locking your choice I do agree that respeccing travel should be a LOT easier. I’m pretty happy with my rocket jump boots, but they’re thematically appropriate for the character.

Aggro-cling is too extreme in the game, and I’m sure it’ll get tweaked, but I can see how a weaker aggro profile could easily be abused by players. I think a better decision would be adding areas on a map that are safer to travel, similar to running through Steel Canyon via the middle of the street. In fact, that may already be there, but we’re such noobs that we haven’t found them yet.

OVerall, however, I’ve found that there’s enough sterrability with my jump jets that I can see an enemy and then steer away from them before landing. Sometimes I land by another one, but less than when I started. Flight is still waaaaaaay safer.

I may be wrong, but can’t you use the Crime Computer like the Radio from CoX, but to pick up mishes from contacts close to you?

If you want to ensure you’re getting enhancements of the right kind you really need to explore the crafting system, but until higher levels you’re better off slotting stuff you find that aligns with your stats. Also make sure you take the chance to trade with friends who have different crafting specialties so you can trade them for stuff you can experiment on and use as components.

I do feel like the game has work to do, but it’s probably at about CoH I2 level, room for improvements.

I ought the lifetime access because I had the cash to hand and the budget is such that reducing on-going payments is on the horizon, so now I’ll never have to pay the monthly fee again!

Actually, travel powers are the most easily tested power in the game. But, yes, with aggro-cling, it would be nice if there were a room full of dummies that shot you with zero-damage weapons, just so you could see how it worked.

Actually, I’ve always found that half-convenient, half-too artificial. That said, the bit of running around MC I’ve done indicates you can pretty much do just that. Through the wilderness, though, much less so.

    Flight is still waaaaaaay safer.

Certainly more than any substantial surface travel (acrobatics, super-speed, super-jump).

I may be wrong, but can’t you use the Crime Computer like the Radio from CoX, but to pick up mishes from contacts close to you?

I’ve not tried that, but I’ll give it a whirl.

I came in at I3 or I4, and it’s difficult to remember how different things were back then.

  9. I rolled in just after the events from I3 ended (so I missed the demise of the 5th Column), but I was there soon enough that I remember the older players talking about what I2 was like and it really feels like CO is at that stage, but at the same time has benefitted from many of the QoL upgrades like keeping mishes inside one zone, etc., but I do agree- where’s the immediate way that’s intutitve to contact your contact remotely? Should we have to give each other hints? Shouldn’t it be a feature rather than a hidden option?

I’m frankly missing instanced missions right now, too much competition for the same objectives, and waiting for it to respawn is not immersive to me.

  10. Waiting on respawns (esp. if there’s a queue of folks waiting, esp. if there are folks jumping that queue) is very un-immersive (exmersive?).

On the other hand, being able to tackle some big baddie (e.g., Ape Plus and the Overmind) in conjunction with other heroes even if you aren’t specifically team mates is kind of cool.

Not sure if there is a way to balance those two.
