I was somewhat appalled to read this story about how the (Protestant) Christian Right is teaming up with the Catholic and Mormon churches, as well as hard-line Islamic countries (such as Sudan, Libya, Iraq, and Iran) to influence UN policy.
Not so much that they are doing it, than for statements like the following:
“We look at them as allies, not necessarily as friends,” said Austin Ruse, founder and president of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, a New York-based organization that promotes conservative values at U.N. social conferences. “We have realized that without countries like Sudan, abortion would have been recognized as a universal human right in a U.N. document.”
Is that the same Sudan that is so roundly criticized for the oppression and enslavement of Christians in the southern end of the country?
Good Lord.
Never mind that it’s the same Islamic bloc that, according to a speaker at the Southern Baptist Conference, follows the teachings of a man characterized as “a demon-possessed pedophile who had 12 wives, and his last one was a 9-year-old girl.”
That the Bush administration is in bed with these folks, too, is more than a bit distressing.
“This alliance shows the depths of perversity of the [U.S.] position,” said Adrienne Germaine, president of the International Women’s Health Coalition. “On the one hand we’re presumably blaming these countries for unspeakable acts of terrorism, and at the same time we are allying ourselves with them in the oppression of women.”
A war on terror indeed.
This does not surprise me. They have, after all, much in common.
