Xkot recommends, rightly, this fascinating little slice-of-life blog about life as a clerk in a video store, focusing on the adult movie section.
The most disturbing customer of the day called right at nine to ask when we opened. I told him we were, and he asked if the DVD of “L.A. Sex Party” was in. (A lot of our movies have “sex party” in the title. It was only a few months ago that I realized that this is because a lot of porn renters don’t know what “orgy” means.)
It’s hilarious, it’s touching, it’s disturbing … and adult language and situations are represented, so You’ve Been Warned.
I’d add that a good portion of this Blog was read (by the author, I believe) as part of the most recent instalment of the NPR show This American Life. I stumbled upon it while driving last Saturday, and was probably a hazard on I-93 near the NH/MA border as I was giggling quite intently.
There’s an online version of that show available at http://www.thislife.org/, though it’s probably the full hour show and this is just around 15 minutes near the halfway point.
Interesting.
It really is an interesting page, both her own reactions to things and the clientele and her observations on the industry and so forth. For those who don’t mind “frank discussion” about such things as one might find in and about the adult movies section, it’s really quite a good read.
Interesting read. I’ve read studies on how “adult film” desensitizes viewers. Fascinating how just working at the store (I don’t think she ever mentioned watching the films) seemed to desensitize her.
I think prolonged exposure to anything, as a generalization, tends to desensitize folks to it.
I think it’s also a matter of whether one gives power to it, or refuses to.
