Oh, I’m sorry — did I knock that over? My bad.

Micro$oft, which last year tried to block all non-IE browsers from viewing its MSN site, seems to be at it again, sending visitors that are using the Opera browser broken stylesheets.

The CSS stylesheet sent to Opera users doesn’t work correctly under Opera. Nor, for that matter, does it work under IE. The one sent to IE users, though, works fine with both IE and Opera. Here‘s some analysis and examples of what’s happening.

M$ denied there was any problem. “Why would we every try to break someone else’s browser? The very idea!” said M$ spokesperson Gohna DeVour. “We’ll look at that right away, you betcha. In the meantime, maybe you’d like to try a complementary copy of IE6?”

When asked about critics who suggest that if MSN only used standard web language structures, it wouldn’t need to send out different stylesheets to different browsers, DeVour had to flee the room, stifling laughter as he went.
