An alternately amusing and disturbing tale of “socially acceptable bigotry” … against Republicans.

“Actually, Suzi,” I explained as gently as possible, “I’m one of those asshole Republicans.”
She dropped her chopsticks and stared at me as if I had just announced that I was a convicted child rapist.
Then she smiled, as she finally grasped the situation. “Oh, you’re kidding, right?”
“No, I really am a Republican.”
“What? Nobody told me.”
I tried to blunt the blow. “I’m actually not terribly interested in politics.” This is, in fact, true.
No matter.
“Well, look,” she said as she pulled her purse out from under her seat. “I’m sorry but I can’t deal with this. Please don’t think me rude, but I really think it would be best if I just left.”

Of course, one can hear much the same knee-jerk bigotry against Democrats — just amongst different crowds.

  1. Good article, but I think that she enjoys playing the victim too much.

Bigotry is just something that people do…in a basic sense. We divide based on what our perceptions of class, religion, appearance, locality, wealth, race, age, gender, etc. As a social animal we are hardwired to constantly define pecking order.

And, yes everybody does it…I do so enjoy listening to people’s views of Boulder when I am asked where I live.

  2. Actually, it’s a “he,” but …

I think your point is generally true, Stan — but it’s also something that we need to keep ourselves aware of and disciplined against.

As to Boulder — well, yeah … but that’s different

  3. Hey…it could be better then most of the stuff currently talk radio.

    For Randy and Dave:

Last night on the drive home, the two afternoon idoits were on KHOW (clearchannel) talking about how monopoly and control of the media are a good thing. And NO, they were not taking their orders from Headquarters (one of them even offered his SGT. certification (?) if he was lying).

  4. Randy….

Plus Dave should get top billing…so it should be the “Dave and Stan show and their colorful cavalcade of Gamers, Geeks, and other oddities”

We could have Margie and Jackie on doing cooking, baking, gardening features….Or at least killer cookies that we can taunt our listening public with.

Clearchannel would never buy it though….
