Went to my semi-annual dental appointment this afternoon. Greeted with smiles — the lead dental assistant said she was really happy to see me because I was always an “easy clean” — she’d just come off of back-to-back appointments with two folks who hadn’t been to the dentist in a number of years …

I told her it was a mutual pleasure being an “easy clean.”

That the dentist’s comment, when she came for her final blessing of my cleaning, that she’d “fall over backwards” if I ever turned out to have a cavity, was also kind of nice.

(Before I get hate mail from folks who have dental problems, I officially Did My Time in the related area of Orthdonture for several years. So there.)

  1. I have very similar experiences when I go for my cleanings as well. I think it’s those years of orthodontia. In my mind I’m thinking after all that hell, I damn well am going to take care of my teeth 🙂

  2. I’m pretty damned regular about brushing my teeth, and I usually use a lot of ice in my drinks (and chew it, which isn’t so good for the teeth structurally, but acts as a nice cleaning method).

That said, I know that, crookedness aside, I have really good enamel. The only cavities I’ve ever had occured all in one year — two or three of them, when I was, oh, 8 or 9 or so. Not sure what different happened that year, but that’s the only time, and I still have those fillings (though the dentist keeps hinting that they’ll need to be replaced soon).

Margie, on the other hand, has very soft enamel, and ongoing problems with crowns and the like.

We hope Katherine has Margie’s tooth *structure* and my tooth *material*.
