I’ve temporarily suspended the “listening to” bits because I’ve shifted to my music set of Game music — Lords of Magic, Quake II, Unreal, Beyond Good and Evil, Deus Ex, and now City of Heroes. Generally upbeat and with no distracting words for my ears to process. I need to concentrate …

More comics I’m reading right now …

  • Strange #6 (Marvel): Joe Straczynski strikes again with his miniseries (?) recreating the origin of Doctor Strange, libertine and skeptic. Joe’s Doc has a slightly revised origin — the Ancient One is here in the States, rather than off in Tibet — but by and large it all rings nicely true — though I very much dislike Brandon Peterson’s rendition of Dormammu. Waiting on the TPB.
  • Strangers in Paradise #74-75 (Abstract): The story continues to become more and more complex, but feels pretty solid. There are exploding ambulances, sexist pigs, attractive art agents, risqué poster sales, and … a phone message left for Katchoo that she keeps playing over and over … If it weren’t that the SiP storyline has grown so entangled, the cast so huge, the timelines so complicated, I’d recommend this book for anyone.

  • Superman #219 (DC): The first of the OMAC cross-overs. Bleah. Mistake. Fortunately, purchased just as a one-off.

  • Superman/Batman #21 (DC): A team of parallel universe Avengers (!) track down Batman and Supes to avenge the death of one of their own. Was this something that happened during the previous tangled timeline? Regardless, the story get complicated by the appearance of both the Atomic Skull and Bizarro Supes and Bats. Strange. Loeb and McGuiness do okay, but something here doesn’t quite gel.

  • Supreme Power #17 (Marvel MAX): Hyperion is “out” as a super-human. But when he defies his government handlers, they decide to out him all the way. The story progresses well.

  • Teen Titans #26 (DC): Kon has to face what he did to the Titans while under Luthor’s control — and whether a creation like himself even has a soul. Geoff Johns uses his lighter angsty touch on this, and it works just fine.

  • The New Thunderbolts #10/91 (Marvel): It turns out the Purple Man is behind a whole bunch of squirelly behavior amongst the T’bolts over the past several issues. But they’re finding out too late … One of the more coherent issues from Nicieza, and nicely illustrated by Grummett.

  • The Ultimates 2 #7 (Marvel): The Ultimates help the US and EU governments disarm Iranian nukes. The captive Thor warns of a traitor inside the group. And someone kills Hawkeye’s family — and possibly Hawkeye, too. Yikes. Nasty fun from Millar, illustrated beautifully as always Hitch.

  • Usagi Yojimbo #84-85 (Dark Horse): Tomoe and Usagi struggle to make it back to Lord Noriyuki with word of what they’ve found. But Tomoe’s sister runs the brigands that are causing the trouble, and she’s a match for anything Usagi and Tomoe can do — and right about now, she’s ready to cut off Usagi’s hand. Yikes, too! Beautiful samurai drama from Stan Sakai, as usual.
