When two completely unrelated yet read-by-me-and-well-respected blogs lambaste a game company for DRM in much the same terms, swearing holy oaths never to spend the money on the game of which they desperately have loved the previous versions and very much wanted to get the latest installment … then the game publisher is doing something, awfully, terribly wrong.

Les and Shamus on Bioshock — the print and TV ads for which look really cool.  Too bad I’ll never get it, either.

  1. I may eventually buy this game if one of two things happen:

    1) Someone releases a crack that rips the Securom out by its teeth. It’s risky dealing with cracks, but it beats the hell out of having someone else dictate to me how I can use my PC.

    2) 2K Games releases a patch that yanks the Securom out by its teeth. I made this number 2 because it’s the lesser likely possibility, though not impossible. Some of the more progressive companies out there (and I can’t recall if it was EPIC Games or iD Software at the moment) have released patches after a year or so that ripped out their copy protection/CD check requirement as they figured by that point in time there were enough cracks doing it already that it was a moot point.

I loved the first two games and it kills me to have to pass up on the sequel, but until I can get rid of the Securom, and I have to clean up my PC already from the demo which ALSO installs that damned DRM, it’s not worth it.

  2. Reading the original post, I couldn’t figure out why people were so upset about Dice Roll Modifiers. (Too many Avalon Hill games in my youth.)

Ironically, maybe the best thing to do is to pirate games using SecuROM until companies decide it doesn’t protect them against piracy. 😉

  3. Shamus lets loose with a few more barrels.

2KGames, the publisher behind BioShock, is enjoying the sort of attention that only mobs of pissed off fans can give. The forums are now a place where thousands are going to unleash their impotent anger at the indifferent machine responible for marrying a game they love to a DRM system they hate. There is a thread there with over two hundred thousand views, and it looks like it’s one of a dozen on the topic.

He then gives a summary of the complaints that should culminate in a horde of angry villagers with torches and pitchforks showing up on 2KGames doorstep. 95% of the complaints stem from, basically, incompetent and/or ignorant and/or contemptuous customer service on 2KGames’ part. This is the sort of things that destroys companies.
