Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- Colorado Ski Train halts operation after 69 years – Huh — well, that’s certainly a shame.
- News Analysis: Democrats Consider Bypassing G.O.P. on Health Care Plan – I think this will have some negative repercussions down the road — but I also think the GOP has made it clear that they are more the Party of “No” than the Parth of “Let’s Try to Govern Together.”
- Dinosaur National Monument gets funds for visitor center
- Review: Jim Butcher’s Turn Coat Goes to Eleven – Okay, the one thing I’ll grant the Kindle — it’s cheaper than hardcover and faster than waiting for the paperback version … Me want.
- Site News: Warner Offers TV-HD-DVD Upgrades to TV-BDs for Smallville, Sopranos, Planet Earth and More! – I think this is a very clever move on their part.
- Bush Administration Pushed Torture In Attempt To Find Iraq-al Qaida Links – So not only did they cook and cherry-pick intelligence to support what they “knew” (wanted to assert) was true, they were willing to keep torturing people to prove it. Spiffy.
- Which sci-fi TV pilots will live and which will die? We take a look – I sadly confess that none of these sound very hopeful. And almost all of them are painfully derivative.
- It had taken months of sneaking: Cheezburger Network
- Anti-gay Virginia wingnut descends on UNC’s campus today – As an apparently lily-white person who thinks Western Civ is pretty keen, I’m also sharply aware of the ethnic and religious elements in my background that would have had me toward the top of these guys’ lists at various times. What a bunch of idjits.
- I’m a blithering idiot…and I vote!!! – Good Lord. There’s Reality-Challenged and then there’s Unbelievable.
- Opening Skinner’s Box: ten psych experiments that remade the world – Need to add this to the Wish List.
- Pareidolia poser – Our brains are great at spotting patterns. That’s pro-survival. Except when it’s not.
- The EagleTec USB Nano flash drive: it doesn’t get much smaller – I think this gets into the category of “way too scary given how much you can so easily misplace.”
- 04/20/09 PHD comic: ‘Tales from the Road – MD Anderson Cancer Center’ – Good stuff. Even cancer (research) can be … well, I wouldn’t say funny, but approachable and entertaining.
- ROCKET SCIENCE: Cheezburger Network
- Genesis I and II: The Facebook Versions – Oh, my, this is amusing.
- Dispatches from the Culture Wars: Lies About Torture – What? A former Senior CIA Official self-servingly exaggerated the truth in an anonymous interview? I’m shocked, shocked I tell you!
- How much? – An interesting article both on teaching something that requires long study for proficiency, and, indirectly, on fencing itself. I took a couple years of fencing at Pomona, under Francis Zold, and enjoyed it quite a bit, even though I knew I wasn’t going to progress beyond the limited amount I’d learned.
