Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- Why we’re not going to make it – Money quote: “We seem to have erased from national memory the concept that big problems consist of accumulated small effects.”
- HUGE: Google Set to Make Gmail Social With Status Update Features – Interesting — though I’ve never found Google to do very good social.
- Landmine Ketchup
- Kitchen Fire Extinguisher – We do have an extinguisher in the kitchen — a Kidde, in fact — but looking at the ingredients (“mono-ammonium phosphate, mica, ammonium sulfate, talc, etc”) sounds a lot less attractive. Maybe it’s time to replace it.
- Sarah Palin won’t rule out 2012 run – chicagotribune.com – My hope is that she runs and completes the destruction of the Republican party. My terror is that she runs and somehow wins.
- Obama’s Secret Police | Mother Jones – Well, there were plenty on the Left who were convinced to a moral certainty that Bush would declare martial law rather than hold the elections of ’02, ’04, ’06, or ’08. So this kind of nuttiness isn’t limited to the Right (thought the motivations of it — the birther fringe, the health care “death panel” crazies — seem to be new to the mix).
- The Underwear Bomber and Climate Legislation | Mother Jones – There are a lot of good reasons for climate legislation aside from the anti-terrorism aspect … but if it helps convince people, more power to them.
- Dianna Parker: Palin apparently needs crib notes for how to avoid hypocrisy: Dianna Parker
- Eric Boehlert: At WashPost , “policy” = fashion – The mainstream media has an odd relationship with Palin — equal parts breathless and unquestioning fascination, and condescension.
- Know Before You Go: Tickets May Come at a Higher Price Than You Realize – Just to show that tyranny and lack of respect for the commons can come from the Left, too …
- BREAKING: Prop 8 Judge Outed – For those who think a gay judge cannot fairly decide this case … why would that mean a straight judge could?
- Palin and Her People – The Washington Monthly – It apalls that (a) she was a serious candidate for vice-president, and (b) some people desperately want her to be our next president. Yeesh.
- Snowfall Timelapse – Cool.
- Amex Passwords – Shorter passwords consisting of a smaller set of characters are stronger than longer ones from larger sets? That seems … counter-intuitive.
- Polling Republicans: The GOP id speaks | The Economist – Two observations that make these poll results less than utter gobsmacking: (1) Only 24% of the population calls itself Republican, i.e., as folks flee to the Indy middle, the ones left behind are likely to have these inane opinions, especially as (2) these are the messages being drummed home by pols and pundits on the Right. The shame here is that instilling Stupid doesn’t take long, but the effects last a long time.
- Fox News Military Analyst Endorses DADT Repeal, Criticizes McCain For Flip-Flopping: Faiz Shakir
- Virginia GOP Mocks Epic Snow Storm As ‘12 Inches Of Global Warming’ – Short-sighted? Too fearful? Or just disingenuous? You decide.
- Utah state representative claims climate change is a ‘conspiracy’ aimed at population control. – Because, making decisions about science by legislative fiat is a swell idea!
