I might actually need to do something about this … or maybe not

Fred Phelps’ loathsome Westboro Baptist Church is coming to town for their standard panoply of “God Hates Fags” (and Jews and Catholics and Americans and …) protests.

And, it turns out, they’re coming very close to town.  As in, a few blocks away, this Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., at St Thomas More Catholic Church down the street.

Hrm.

On the one hand, it’s hard think of a group that is a greater waste of oxygen, or worse advertisement for Christianity, than the Phelps clan, and more deserving of being publicly countered (if not ridiculed).

On the other hand … 7 a.m. on a Saturday?

Maybe the greater moral victory is for them to be there marching back and forth, and everyone else be snug in bed with their loved ones (of whatever gender).

  1. Best response to Phelps I’ve seen is the nonsense signs, like “God Hates Corduroy” or “This Is Not A Sign” (with a picture of a sign)…

If you do go, bring back pictures! And a bagel.

  2. I got a call from my mom about this, since this is the church they attend when they are visiting here. And her familiarity with the Phelpsies is with their military funeral shenanigans.

Current schedule, to give an example of their equal opportunity asininity:

As I noted to her, the Phelpsies are interested in anything that gets their hate in front of a camera. Their particular kink about St Thomas More is that all Catholic priests are pedophiles, and all Catholics support pedophilia by doing so.

I’ll note that there is a Saturday Mass at 7:30 a.m. Assuming I won’t actually be up at that hour, my best thoughts and prayers to the congregation attending, for patience, forebearence, and good humor toward these idjits.

    1. Standley Lake High School is in Westy not Broomfield, let’s hope they get lost on the way.

I guess it means they are in town tonight, I wonder where?

Also, why did Standley Lake got on the list, that makes no sense what so ever. I can see at least some sort of sense for the Thursday Activities, but not the friday ones.

Wow, they do hate the jews though, don’t they.

      1. Quoth the site (unlinked):

Standley Lake High School 9300 W. 104th Avenue WBC must preach to these doomed children, as the only hope to the last generation of Doomed americans — wholly given over to the lie that it’s okay to be gay. These simple sluts and bastards have nothing to look forward to, are violent to their core, and will serve as fodder for the spewing continent when the judgment of God lands with force upon this arrogant nation. While they are alive, they can repent, so we must preach to them and bind them with these eternal words. God hates rebellious Doomed americans. Amen!

        Idjits.

  3. For a long time, Topeka churches displayed a banner, “God’s love speaks loudest” in response to Phelps’ protests. My brother and sister-in-law used to mow the lawn at their church which was catty-corner to St. David’s Episcopal in Topeka. One time there was nothing going on at St. David’s, so the Phelps clan decided to protest at my brother’s church where they were mowing. My brother politely yelled from the riding mower, “Excuse me, I need to mow where you are standing.” and my sister-in-law followed by moving to their new location and saying “Excuse me, I need to trim here.” Eventually, the Phelps group got tired of the forced exercise and went back to the relative calm of St. David’s. This remains one of my favorite stories about the bunch.
