I’m SOOOOO torn with Larry Correia’s Monster Hunter books. On the one hand they are a rollicking good time, with the kind of gun porn I can to appreciate reading the Destroyer books in my youth. On the other, my older self has no patience for the pro-gun anti-government crap spewed by EVERY character in his books, AND I made the mistake of friending him on Facebook, and the gun nuttiness continues there.
I appreciate the 2nd amendment, I’m a gamer, so I also have an almost unhealthy love of weapons, but I don’t want EVERYONE to have every gun available in the world.
I’m a firm believer that everyone who wants a gun should be able to have a rifle. That’s enough for home defense, and far more useful if you’re called up as part of a militia or need to participate in an armed uprising.
Again, I understand the arguements for handguns, I even think they’re fun, but I firmly believe that handguns are a seperate issue. /end rant
I’m willing to treat his pro-gun/anti-government bits in the pulp framework he has, without taking them too seriously (I assume that at some level they are meant seriously, but the books invite a lighter perspective). It would be nice if, just to tone down the pulp stereotypes, not _every_ Fed were unfeeling, corrupt, fascistic, or just a dick. (To be fair, we do get a rather likeable new Federal monster hunter in the third book. I’ll leave his fate to the spoiler warnings.)
Out of curiosity, what sort of home defense would one need a rifle for, vs. a hand gun?
On the handgun defense issue: Unless one is letting an intruder get closer than 3 feet why would you need anything other than a rifle or a shotgun?
On the Monster Hunter books, it was going into the kitchen and seeing what the cook was doing that spoiled the soup for me. Never go into the kitchen on a restaurant you enjoy eating at! Applies to books, too.
@Arty – In terms of household defense (which I usually think of as defense inside the household), I would think (purely as an uninformed opinion) that a handgun would more wieldy than a rifle or shotgun.
