But as long as it just keeps happening Over There and doesn't risk the lives of any of Our Troops, I don't expect the American public will get too upset.

This is definitely a two sides to the story story, wouldn't you say? It isn't just American hegemony that motivates the drone strikes in the first place. They could be stopped in short order if the national government and local leaders over there stepped up a wee bit. Okay, maybe stepped up a lot. But still.
I'm not sure the way to cause them to "step up" is to lob drones across their borders and blow people up. Most people tend to resent that, a lot.
If Mexico decided to start sending in drones against the US to attack people it said were drug war miscreants that were not being pursued quickly enough by the DEA, I don't think our first reaction would be to agree to their demands.
Of course, the hands of the national Pakistani government, and local groups, aren't necessarily clean. The question becomes, Does that justify our killing civilians, including children?
And don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to make the case for. No civilian casualties are justified of course. Not sure military casualties are so easily justified, for that matter.
Just noting that it took years of failed attempts to gain cooperation before we descended into this drone mess.
Perhaps. Or perhaps years of claiming – at home – to be asking for cooperation, all the while letting the CIA and the cronies do their usual worst.
Or that. I'm no expert.
