My Mother-in-Law picked up a Pantech Marauder phone via Verizon yesterday, her first smartphone.
Interestingly, it has a "starter mode" interface you can turn on to have a bit simpler of an Android experience up front (more info here: http://youreguide.vzw.com/a2/why-the-pantech-marauder-is-the-best-first-smartphone/).
Now I just need to encourage her to get her contacts into Google so they flow naturally to her phone, too.
Other home computer consulting included getting them on LastPass.
