Thermal inversion

Sadly, one of the winter problems we have here in Denver — a thermal inversion where colder air is keeping slightly warmer air down at the surface. That, in turn, keeps any smoke, pollutants, or dust from getting away, leading to our infamous "Brown Cloud."

Denver air quality has substantially improved since the 70s/80s, but it's something that takes constant vigilance.
