11 Rejected Canadian Flag Designs
When Canada adopted its flag in the mid-1960s, 2,136 of the submitted designs contained a maple leaf. Another 389 featured beavers.
She's a grand ol' flag!
I cannot imagine the chaos that would erupt in the American government and society if, for some reason, we decided to redesign our flag. The confluence of aesthetic, cultural, and ideological opinions would be nigh-apocalyptic. And while I think the eventual Canadian maple leaf flag turned out surprisingly successfully, I shudder to think of what design the US would adopt today, by what process, and what conspiracy theories the new design and the change itself would spawn.
