That having been said, the idea that the California Highway Patrol can't post safety recommendations and guidelines around the (legal) practice without being seen as endorsing it seems — dumb. And not conducive to safety.

CHP stuck in the middle on motorcycle lane-splitting
The California Highway Patrol has withdrawn its safety guidance on motorcycle lane-splitting.
I could never get used to this when I lived in California.
I grew up with it, so I accepted it even while finding it irksome. My tolerance has dropped coming back from a state which doesn't allow it.
Wait, this is legal in California? Are they short of organ donors or something? How can motorcyclists not get hit from cars changing lanes and stuff even in stop-and-go traffic?
It's legal. It's not fun to drive when the motorcycles are doing it.
Yup, it's legal there. As you can imagine, being rear-ended by a motorcycle when changing lanes (esp. in slow traffic) is not unheard of. Happened to me once, in fact.
