As the article notes, apparently it's been confirmed that Peter "Star-Lord" Quill's father is not the comic book canon J'son of the Spartoi / Spartax. Okay, I'm cool with that. In fact, I'm particularly happy about that, because why drag a whole other star empire into it when we've already got the Xandar and Kree realms floating about.
But, then, who is that "angel" his mom talks about?
There are five (serious (ish)) contenders I've heard mentioned, assuming it's a significant cosmic player in the Marvel Universe:
1. Thanos – Yeah, seems unlikely that anyone would wax fondly about being courted by the big purple guy. Plus, even if GotG riffed off of a lot of classic movies, coming that close to Star Wars might make James Gunn gunshy (even if Disney owns both franchises).
2. *Adam Warlock* – That would certainly tie in with a conflict against Thanos concerning the Infinity Gems / Stones / McGuffins. And Warlock can be ethereal enough (when not ranting-crazy) to be consider "angelic." And we've apparently seen one of Warlock's cocoons in the Collector's collection. Still, Adam Warlock as a dad (let alone one who would send away for his son) seems … unlikely.
3. Captain Marvel – As in Mar-Vell, the original Kree warrior come to Earth. Cosmic in nature, a standard opponent of Thanos, and all that good stuff. But … hard to believe that, if true, there wouldn't have been some hint while he Quill was dealing with Ronan and his Kree warship.
4. Star-Hawk – Now this one has some legs. He's one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy (comic book edition), just like Yondu was (and note that Quill's dad sent Yondu to retrieve him). He has kind of angelic cape fin thingies in his costume, and talks in a cosmic / angelic sort of fashion. And there's the name, of course. I hope it's not, though, because, damn, he's a boring character. Unless they start doing all that gender-swapping stuff.
5. Starfox – Okay, this one's my favorite. Eros is an Eternal, just like Thanos — indeed, they're brothers — which sets up some distinct conflict with Big and Purple. The Eternals were created by the Celestials (we saw one of them during the Collector's info-dump) as highly advanced humans (thus allowing true breeding) and are very long-lived (thus Nova Prime's mention that Quill's non-human half is something very old and not seen in a long time). Eros (Starfox) has red hair (like Quill) and the same kind of love-em-and-leave-em attitude toward women that Quill demonstrates. He's dazzlingly handsome, and capable of pleasurably tweaking the emotions of others (thus tying into Quill's mother's infatuation). Think of him a bit as Cap'n Jack's father. Plus there's that whole Star-name thing.
I like this one because, aside from all that fits, I've always enjoyed Starfox. I can see a number of ways they can play it, from the Light to Thanos' Darkness, to Quill finding a dissolute womanizer that causes him to reconsider his own ways.
Anyhow, those are my speculations. Any other legitimate contenders out there?

I wouldn't mind it being Starfox, either. Good call.
I read in an interview with James Gunn (I think it was) that the cocoon seen in the Collector's ship did, indeed, contain Adam Warlock, so there might be something to that, too.
+Mark Means Yeah, he's confirmed that. But it could be just an "Easter Egg" (so to speak) or foreshadowing …
(Hmmm. Maybe there's a reason why Quill's father never followed up with Yondu's errand for the last 17 years …)
Angels have "cape fin thingies"?
And who has confirmed what? You seem to be responding to a nonexistent reply.
+Scott Randel Sorry, there must be muting going on.
James Gunn has confirmed that the we've seen Adam Warlock's cocoon in the Collector's collection.
Muting? Oh, so Mark Means is hiding everything he posts from me. I wonder what I did to scare him so badly.
+Scott Randel Dude …
