We were all ready to go and buy the flooring for our kitchen project, when I ran across http://www.cbsnews.com/news/lumber-liquidators-linked-to-health-and-safety-violations/ and http://www.cbsnews.com/news/more-on-tests-used-to-investigate-lumber-liquidators/ .
And, of course, we'd been about to get some laminate cork flooring from Lumber Liquidators. Sigh.
Lumber Liquidators linked to health and safety violations
60 Minutes found that Lumber Liquidators’ Chinese-made laminate flooring contains amounts of toxic formaldehyde that may not meet health and safety standards
Too bad, because cork flooring is da bomb.
There are a great many places to get flooring from. Carpet Exchange did ours, installers were great but the sales person was a bit squirrelly.
Yeah, we're going to be looking at alternatives, but it was frustrating being that far from pulling the trigger, doing one more scosh of legwork, and having this come up at the top of the search results.
(That the controversy has been funded by folk who are selling LL stock short is itself a complicating factor.)
We'll definitely be trying to do the cork. It's just the continue legwork that's irksome.
+Stan Pedzick So we went to the Carpet Exchange, which not only had cork flooring (which I hadn't considered), but also sells the Cambria quartz countertops we're looking for and the decorative tile for the backsplash that we're utterly inspired to get.
On the down side, when we went by the Tile Shop to pick up the regular backsplash tile we decided on last fall, we found it's discontinued. Fortunately, that's the least finicky of the elements of the design, so coming up with a replacement will be easy.
Of course, the related lawsuit is being backed back short sellers that feel that Lumber Liquidators is over-valued. A group that has a high monetary incentive to have this look as bad as possible – take that for what it's worth.
<edit> Of course, now that I've seen the whole video – the disclosure of this was typical 60-minutes, and the video is indeed pretty damning.</edit>
+Al Hunt Yeah, that the people backing the lawsuit have a monetary incentive other than the truth here does raise some questions.
